Trying to whip out a couple of handmade Christmas gifts before Thanksgiving, so that I am not up til all hours of the night through out December (up sewing that is, baby P still isn’t sleeping through the night, so I am up enough as it is!) I added a little ruffle trim I picked up at Hobby Lobby to the center of the outside fabric for these 2 and I think they came out really cute. If you wanted to make these you would need 4 items (besides sewing machine and thread and all that jazz). Just a small note on the photos, I ended up top sewing the brown zebra cover once I saw how pretty it looked on the black polka dot, I just forgot to take an “after” photo I guess.
- 3.5 x 26″ strip of any patterned cotton
- 3.5 x 26″ strip of minkie dot fleece
- 3 x 24″ strip of thin interfacing
- 26″ piece of trim (or you could hand make a ruffle, the finished length would need to be 24″)
(these are just random measurements I used to make mine, by no means are they the only measurements you can use, I just need a lot of extra seam allowance when I use minkie dot. Plus, I like to top sew the edges, so I needed extra width for that, too)
The quick and dirty tutorial would be
- wash and cut your fabric
- iron your interfacing on to the back of your outside fabric
- sewing trim to the right side of the outside piece
- iron and hem the short edges of both pieces (i did 1/2″ fold & iron and then another 1/2″ fold)
- lay the 2 pieces, right sides facing, pin, sew using a 1/4″ seam (if you can, I am horrible at that part)
- cut off any remaining seam if you have a boat load extra like me
- turn inside out and press
- top sew 1/4″ in on both sides if it pleases you, sha-zam, you’re finished!
